After nearly four decades of anticipation, two music icons Charly García and Sting have finally joined forces for a long-awaited collaboration. Their new single, “In the City,” released today on all digital platforms, brings together the soul of Argentine rock and the elegance of British pop-rock in a track that feels both timeless and electrifying.
The story of “In the City” began back in 1988, when García and Sting first shared the stage at Buenos Aires’ Estadio River Plate during the historic Human Rights Now! concert organized by Amnesty International. That fleeting moment left a lasting impression and the dream of one day collaborating quietly endured for 37 years.
The idea resurfaced earlier this year when the two legends reunited backstage at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires before Sting’s concert. That spontaneous meeting reignited their artistic chemistry and set the wheels in motion for what would become one of the most meaningful collaborations in Latin and global music history.
“This collaboration came about naturally when we met backstage before his show,” García shared. “I’ve always admired Sting’s sound and songwriting. This was a song I had written in English, and I felt the chorus was perfect for his voice. Hearing him sing on my track moved me deeply.”
Sting echoed the sentiment simply: “It’s an honour to sing a song with Charly García.”
A Global Sound with Local Soul
Written and composed by Charly García, “In the City” is one of the few songs he’s penned entirely in English. The duet blends both artists’ distinctive styles García’s poetic rock and Sting’s melodic sophistication backed by intricate guitar work from Dominic Miller (Sting’s longtime collaborator and Argentine by birth) and drums by Diego López de Arcaute.
The recording was produced across continents: García’s vocals were tracked in Buenos Aires by Matías Sznaider, while Sting and Miller recorded their parts in London at Permanent Waves Studios, under the direction of Tony Lake. The final mastering was handled by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound, the same engineer behind Clics Modernos and much of García’s solo catalogue, ensuring the sonic excellence fans have come to expect.
The official music video, directed by Belén Asad, captures the spirit of two cities and two eras. Shot between Buenos Aires and New York City, the visuals feature García and Sting traveling separately through the night in taxis, while Miller performs in a subway station a symbolic reflection of distance, connection, and the rhythm of urban life. Sting’s scenes were directed by Maximilian Stafford, adding a polished cinematic balance to the project’s dual setting.
“In the City” represents far more than a collaboration it’s the union of two generations, two languages, and two worlds of music. With Charly García’s visionary artistry and Sting’s enduring global influence, the song stands as a testament to creativity without borders and friendship that transcends time.
